Implementing daylight in buildings reduces artificial lighting energy, costs, and CO2 emissions and improves the welfare and performance of occupants. This course examines the benefits of daylight and explains how tubular daylighting devices (TDDs) can efficiently and effectively supply it in an energy-efficient manner, how they optimize all levels of daylight, and how they avoid issues such as glare and heat gain associated with windows and conventional skylights. Applicable credits and features in LEED® v4.1 Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction, and Operations and Maintenance and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2 are noted. The course concludes with several sample commercial installations.

In many climate zones, the heating and cooling of outside air (OA) is one of the largest energy loads and contributors to building emissions. Traditional commercial HVAC designs based on the Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP) rely on large volumes of outside air to maintain acceptable indoor air quality, often resulting in oversized HVAC equipment and wasted energy. Adding to this, good indoor air quality is no longer just a matter of meeting code but is now seen as a necessity for business continuity, improved learning outcomes, and employee productivity. In this course, we will examine ASHRAE Standard 62.1, a recognized standard for nonresidential ventilation system design, and its Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP), which allows for the use of air cleaning technology to offset outside air for a more efficient ventilation system design. We will review the requirements and calculations for this procedure, showing the impact on indoor air quality and energy use, and present a number of case studies. We will also show how IAQP used with air cleaning can help achieve LEED® v4 BD+C: New Construction and O+M: Existing Buildings and WELL v2™ certification.

Clothes dryer fire safety is a serious and often overlooked problem. This course examines how a properly designed duct system with a minimum path vent and self-aligning magnets can simplify dryer installation, ease routine cleaning, boost dryer efficiency, and decrease fire hazards.

Rubber has been recycled for more than a century and used in recycled rubber flooring for over 65 years. Over this time, it has been proven to be a durable and flexible product that improves numerous aspects of the built environment while benefiting the natural environment. This course examines the sustainability attributes of recycled rubber flooring, how rubber is recycled, how it is used to make flooring, its health and safety benefits, and where to use and not use the product. The course also includes an overview of how recycled rubber flooring can be used to meet a number of USGBC’s LEED® v4 BD+C and WELL Building Standard® v2 credit requirements.

Building fires claim nearly 4,000 lives each year in the U.S. It is the responsibility of building designers to do their utmost to prevent such fires and their accompanying loss of life. Often, the difference between life and death is as simple as a fire door that functions properly. This course focuses on describing how design professionals can reinforce their ability to ensure that fire doors are specified, installed, inspected, and maintained properly and that they meet or exceed all relevant code requirements.

This course discusses how play impacts child development and describes the options and considerations for designing an inclusive playground that benefits all children and the community.

This course explores the benefits of inclusive spaces and discusses the sustainable, hygienic, functional, and distinctive design and material options for inclusive public bathrooms.

While frequently chosen for aesthetics and durability, clay brick is not often considered when energy efficiency is a primary concern, even though it historically played a significant role in occupant comfort before the widespread use of HVAC systems. This course discusses the basics of heat transfer, relevant energy code provisions for walls, and how current research by the National Brick Research Center demonstrates the role that brick veneer can play in meeting or exceeding energy requirements in modern wall assemblies.

Daylighting has traditionally been considered a functional way to bring natural light into building design. This course explores innovative applications of daylighting using various methods to deliver natural light into spaces and create visually appealing natural lighting as part of an overall design. It also examines daylighting strategies, considerations, and material options for successful project planning. By incorporating daylighting into projects, architects can create innovative environments that meet the sustainability goals of the building and the health, safety, and welfare needs of its occupants. Applicable credits and features in the LEED® v4.1 Building Design and Construction rating system and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2 are noted.

At this time, there are no national or state codes relating to snow retention for roofing applications, even in the heaviest snow load areas. Consequently, it is very important for building professionals to take extra care when designing a snow retention system for installations in snowy environments. This course provides a review of the problems and solutions associated with roofing in cold climates, including a discussion on the proper engineering of snow retention devices. There are many dangers involved if the appropriate considerations are not made while building and maintaining a roof in an alpine region.

The construction of residential and commercial buildings that use less energy to operate and are long lived is a key part of sustainable design. Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) provide the necessary U-factor, airtightness, resiliency, and durability for all building types. Insulated concrete forms in residential and commercial construction projects offer excellent thermal performance and reduced energy consumption and operating costs, while maintaining a very comfortable and healthy interior environment. This course examines the ICF wall, including materials and components, discusses design considerations and construction, and identifies how ICF may be used to meet a number of LEED® v4 BD+C credit requirements.

Rainscreen systems are designed to prevent moisture from infiltrating walls and weakening their structural integrity. Multicomponent backup wall systems have traditionally been used for commercial projects but have drawbacks ranging from creating plenty of waste to producing design challenges. The alternative of insulated metal panel barrier wall systems offers many advantages that are discussed in this course, including economic and environmental benefits, easier installation, and a fresh, modern look.

Insulated metal shakes offer a three-dimensional appearance that is a long-lasting alternative to conventional standing seam metal, cedar, or slate roofing. The roof system installs easily, keeping labor costs down; it withstands extreme conditions and is low maintenance throughout its long life. This course describes how the high performance of 24-gauge Galvalume® steel, a PVDF coating, and EPS insulation is combined to form a durable, energy-efficient, completely recyclable roofing product with a classic look.

Insulated vinyl siding, known as insulated siding, is an exterior cladding that combines the protection and low maintenance of traditional vinyl siding with the energy efficiency of EPS foam. The composite results in an improvement in performance and aesthetics. This course discusses the benefits associated with installing insulated siding on new and renovation residential construction projects, and the range of architectural styles that can be achieved with the breadth of design and color options available.
