  • Course description: AEC Daily: Fire Safety in High-Rise Structures

    One of the most complex and least understood areas where fire can propagate is at the perimeter of a multistory building. Fire can spread not only from floor to floor via the edge-of-slab/curtain wall intersections but also along the exterior building enclosure where untested, combustible components are often installed. This program outlines best design practices for providing fire protection for building occupants per ASTM E2307 and ASTM E2874.

    Explain the importance of fire containment and how detection, suppression, and compartmentation are all required to increase the probability of successfully maximizing life safety in high-rise buildings.

    Recall the International Building Code (IBC) 2018 and CAN/ULC-S115-2018 fire safety requirements for the vertical separation of openings, exterior curtain wall/floor intersections, spandrel walls, and perimeter joint firestop systems.

    Describe the dynamics of vertical fire spread at the perimeter of a building and the perimeter fire containment system testing standards ASTM E2307 and ASTM E2874.

    List the six design elements that are critical to the proper design and attachment of a complete perimeter fire containment system.

    Discuss the International Firestop Council’s guidelines for evaluating and providing engineering judgments for firestopping systems, and outline installation considerations related to a variety of special conditions, including short spandrel height, no backer bar/reinforcement member, steel back pans, wide spandrels, geometry of the spandrel wall, exposed curtain wall anchors at the floor line, and combustible building materials.
