CEU Events: Targeting Carbon in the Fight Against Climate Change

Course Length - 1 Hour

In person (requires the presence of a live instructor, classroom, webinar, streamed event)

Scientific consensus has already established that increasing atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide—created by fossil fuels and energy production—is contributing to rising sea levels, intensification of weather-related events, and the degradation of natural resources. This course discusses the impact carbon emissions have on the planet and how buildings can influence greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon, to lower embodied carbon through more sustainable building products offering. We will learn about manufacturing transparency and the ability to compare embodied carbon values against a baseline and against similar products, which are critical to reducing embodied carbon.

CEU Events: Today’s Educational Facilities–Designing With Our Ears

In person (requires the presence of a live instructor, classroom, webinar, streamed event) - 1 HOUR

How do we go about designing educational environments to be healthier and better for learning outcomes?

This presentation explores the tremendous opportunity that architects, designers, and educators hold in their hands. We look at rethinking what an educational facility should be and how the physical environment can be designed to have a positive impact on learning. It is time to start designing with our ears. We examine spatial strategies, performance benchmarks, and architectural testing methods that allow designers and architects to evaluate designs against industry guidelines for sound performance. We discuss the primary function of a room and explore noise level thresholds that have serious long-term implications on learning and health.

As the focus on building energy performance continues to grow in many jurisdictions across North America, the interest in the Passive House standard is growing as well. For the uninitiated, this standard can seem daunting, especially when it comes to incorporating manufactured components, such as windows. But window configuration and calculations in Passive House projects dont have to be overwhelming.

Through a review of window materials and configurations, this presentation outlines options for meeting the Passive House standard, as well as opportunities to cost-optimize high-performance fenestration.

D.A.S. Concrete Countertops Inc. - How to Specify Concrete Countertops

DATE: OCTOBER 25 AT 12-1 P.M. (ATL)

As we get better at reducing the operational emissions of buildings, addressing their embodied carbon is becoming more important. So far, the focus in designing sustainable, low-carbon buildings is primarily on the building envelope and major systems. While finishes have a relatively small impact on the overall equation, they are still part of the puzzle.

This course covers the basic considerations to be aware of when specifying concrete countertops or other decorative precast elements, making it easier for architects to include concrete surfaces as a locally made, sustainable alternative to mass-produced mainstream materials.

Many North American jurisdictions are moving beyond ASHRAE performance requirements for exterior wall assemblies, shifting instead to a holistic, building energy performance standard (BEPS) approach. A line-item-by-line-item approach no longer yields the best results. Instead, component performance needs to be viewed across multiple facets to build high-performance exterior wall assemblies. This presentation discusses the impacts of thermal bridging on compliance with emerging building energy performance standards (BEPS), as well as ASHRAE.
