This course details the benefits and selection process of magnesium oxide (MgO) sheathing in multifamily and commercial construction. MgO sheathing offers structural, fire resistance, and other properties that enable architects and designers to simplify the design and installation of building enclosures. Comparisons of MgO sheathing to traditional sheathing materials such as gypsum are included.

Concrete floors require protection. Choosing the right concrete floor coating system is essential to meeting the performance requirements of commercial, industrial, and residential environments. This course discusses the assessment and repair of a concrete floor and specifies how to select a high-performance coating system based on the conditions and requirements of a construction project.

This course provides architects and designers with a comprehensive understanding of the transformative potential of modern gas fireplaces in contemporary design. It covers key technologies such as direct vent systems, frameless designs, natural heat release systems, and heat control innovations. Participants will recognize how to incorporate fireplaces as both functional heating solutions and architectural design elements. The course also reviews important safety features, including double-glass heat barriers, to ensure compliance with modern standards.

Traditionally, hydraulic doors have been used in aviation hangars and agricultural and commercial applications. Recently, they’ve found unique uses, such as in shipping containers and residential installations. This course reviews the types of hydraulic doors available and how they promote user well-being, safety, and ADA compliance. Also reviewed are installation methods, cladding options, and applicable standards and performance characteristics.

Contemporary drinking fountains, water coolers, and water bottle refilling stations provide communities with access to safe, clean drinking water. This course recounts the history of the drinking fountain and addresses regulations surrounding drinking water distribution and treatment. It introduces touchless activation, compares the use of bottled water to bottle refillers, and provides guidelines for specifying commercial water delivery systems.

Now more than ever, public restrooms must provide users with a hygienic and safe experience that supports inclusivity, human health, and wellness. In this course, we explore how multistall public restrooms address users’ concerns about hygiene, safety, privacy, and efficiency through partitions, touchless fixtures, hand dryers, and more. We also discuss fulfilling WELL Building Standard™ v2 requirements by promoting public health and safety in restroom design.

This course explores insulating concrete forms (ICFs) as part of a sustainable construction system by covering their benefits, applications, and design considerations. The course delves into the structural properties, energy efficiency, and environmental impact of ICFs. Also presented are best practices for integrating ICFs into various architectural projects and a concise overview of installation steps.

Daylighting is the controlled admission of natural light into a building. It takes into consideration both direct and diffuse sunlight and reduces use of electric light, thereby decreasing energy costs. By controlling daylight, solar heat gain can be minimized, lowering the demand on HVAC systems. This course evaluates a variety of daylighting strategies for commercial applications and includes discussions about the relevance of daylight factor calculations and the impact fabric characteristics have on a shading solution.

Implementing daylight in buildings reduces artificial lighting energy, costs, and CO2 emissions and improves the welfare and performance of occupants. This course examines the benefits of daylight and explains how tubular daylighting devices (TDDs) can efficiently and effectively supply it in an energy-efficient manner, how they optimize all levels of daylight, and how they avoid issues such as glare and heat gain associated with windows and conventional skylights. Applicable credits and features in LEED® v4.1 Building Design and Construction, Interior Design and Construction, and Operations and Maintenance and the WELL Building Standard™ version 2 are noted. The course concludes with several sample commercial installations.

Clothes dryer fire safety is a serious and often overlooked problem. This course examines how a properly designed duct system with a minimum path vent and self-aligning magnets can simplify dryer installation, ease routine cleaning, boost dryer efficiency, and decrease fire hazards.

Rubber has been recycled for more than a century and used in recycled rubber flooring for over 65 years. Over this time, it has been proven to be a durable and flexible product that improves numerous aspects of the built environment while benefiting the natural environment. This course examines the sustainability attributes of recycled rubber flooring, how rubber is recycled, how it is used to make flooring, its health and safety benefits, and where to use and not use the product. The course also includes an overview of how recycled rubber flooring can be used to meet a number of USGBC’s LEED® v4 BD+C and WELL Building Standard® v2 credit requirements.

Daylight is essential for our health and well-being, but controlling glare and heat gain can be challenging.  This course explores how to increase visual and thermal comfort and reduce energy use by automating the balance of natural and artificial light. Also discussed are the benefits for building performance compared to manual shade operation and the role of high-performance shade systems in meeting requirements in LEED® v4.1 Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction and Core and Shell, LEED v4.1 Interior Design and Construction (ID+C): Commercial Interiors, and the WELL Building Standard version 2.

Building fires claim nearly 4,000 lives each year in the U.S. It is the responsibility of building designers to do their utmost to prevent such fires and their accompanying loss of life. Often, the difference between life and death is as simple as a fire door that functions properly. This course focuses on describing how design professionals can reinforce their ability to ensure that fire doors are specified, installed, inspected, and maintained properly and that they meet or exceed all relevant code requirements.

Flushing is a key activity that can improve water quality and reduce the risk of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens, enhancing patient health and well-being. This course examines flushing practices as complementary to supplemental disinfection and a critical component in hospital water management plans.

Undesirable acoustics in educational spaces have long been considered averse to our goals to effectively teach, create, collaborate, listen, and learn. Now, in the wake of implementing pandemic protocols, our acoustic comfort in these spaces is greatly challenged. This course examines the impacts of poor soundscapes in educational facilities and introduces innovative solutions for improving acoustics in these areas while keeping us comfortable and safe from exposure to emerging viruses.
