Course description: AEC Daily: Biomimicry: Design by Nature
Animals, plants, and microbes are engineers of what works and lasts on earth. Biomimicry is a practice in which nature’s designs, patterns, and strategies are examined to find sustainable solutions to our technical and design problems. This course discusses how applying the concepts of biomimicry can better connect our designs and buildings with nature and examines the relationship between nature’s solutions to light, heat, and glare control and shading design principles.
Define biomimicry in terms of its elements and discuss how the practice of biomimicry is used to find sustainable solutions to our technical and design problems.
Discuss the application of biomimetic principles in design to show how nature can teach us to create products and buildings that perform better, use less energy, eliminate or create less waste, and reduce material costs.
Identify the relationship between shading principles and nature’s solutions to show how an indoor environment can be improved by controlling heat gain, light, and glare.
Conceptualize a preliminary design application for shading based on the principles of biomimicry to support the well-being of the occupants while contributing to an energy-efficient building design.
