Course description: AEC Daily: Strength and Conditioning Facilities: Why Flooring Is Key to Supporting High-Performance Athletes
Strength and conditioning facilities are designed for high-performance athlete training at the professional, international, national, collegiate, and high school levels. These facilities are fundamentally different than commercial fitness centers (which focus on improving general fitness) and must be custom designed for the athletes’ sport-specific training programs. This course reviews key design considerations for these facilities, including specialized flooring construction required for athlete safety and preservation of building structure.
Recognize the functional differences between traditional fitness centers and strength and conditioning facilities and discuss why the floor plays a key role in in protecting the health and safety of high-performance athletes while motivating them to improve their abilities.
Explain why recycled rubber flooring is used in strength and conditioning facilities due to its durability, impact and acoustic performance, and bearing on an athlete’s anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical safety.
Evaluate recycled rubber flooring as a sustainable material—its resource efficiency and contribution to creating environments with good indoor air quality.
Discuss space planning considerations for a strength and conditioning facility and explain why different areas may require different flooring products.
Specify a weight room flooring system to promote the safety of the athletes and their support staff and protect the building and other occupants from excessive shock vibration and noise reverberation.
