  • Course description: AEC Daily: Making the Practical and Financial Case for Sustainable Roofing Systems

The trend toward sustainable building design took on new dimensions during the pandemic and concurrent supply chain crisis. Coupled with the ongoing dilution of skilled labor in the construction trades, there emerged an increased urgency and opportunity to specify and install sustainable roofing systems. This course compares low-slope roofing materials in terms of reliability, sustainability, and financial benefits.

Discuss how recent historical events have affected the way we approach the roofing marketplace.

Evaluate the specification of thermoplastic membranes as a key to managing labor, waste, and safety on roofing projects.

Compare insulation materials used in low-slope roofing with a focus on reducing energy consumption and increasing roof resilience.

Examine a hypothetical project in order to compare the financial and environmental implications of tear-off vs. reuse of roof assemblies.
