  • Course description: AEC Daily: You Are Punching Holes in My WRB: Preventing Water Infiltration through Cladding Attachment Penetrations

    ONGOING - FREE - 1 HOUR

Penetrations of the WRB are unavoidable, but it is critical to ensure that they remain watertight. The recommendations for sealing these penetrations are often based on unrelated test methods, such as those for nail penetrations in roofing membranes, or on anecdotal evidence. This course covers a data-driven method used to determine which type of flashing and sealing solution is best to ensure watertightness after cladding attachments are installed over polyisocyanurate insulating sheathing. Also discussed is information on how other single-layer insulating sheathing systems allow for watertightness of the assembly after cladding attachment.

    INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION

    Learning Objectives

Describe common ways to test for water infiltration through water-resistive barriers to mitigate the impact of excessive moisture on building materials and occupant health.

Explain how properly attaching water-resistive barriers can meet the requirements of section R703.1.1 of the 2015 International Residential Code and ASTM D226.

Use techniques for sealing cladding attachments over polyisocyanurate insulating sheathing to prevent water infiltration and mold and moisture issues.

Specify solutions where cladding attachment penetrations do not require full penetration of the wall assembly.
