Course description: AEC Daily: Eastern White Pine: Sustainable Versatility
ONGOING - FREE - 1 CORE HOUR
Through sustainable management, the forests of New England have had a remarkable comeback since the 1830s, with eastern white pine being the most represented softwood in these forests. This light, yet strong wood species has been used for generations and today, meets the requirements of a renewable and sustainable building material. This course reviews eastern white pine’s contribution to sustainability, its grading rules, wood products, and many applications.
ONGOING - FREE - 1 CORE HOUR
Learning Objectives
Describe the characteristics of eastern white pine, where it grows, and its availability.
Examine the life cycle analysis of eastern white pine and recall how the harvesting, transporting, and manufacturing of wood products produces fewer greenhouse gases and uses significantly less energy than other materials.
Recall how eastern white pine is a prolific regenerating species of softwood, allowing it to be an excellent tree for reforestation.
Identify the different patterns and profiles produced from eastern white pine for interior and exterior construction end-uses.
Summarize the environmental impact of using wood as a construction material, considering LEED®, and other forestry certification programs.
