Course description: AEC Daily: Acetylated Wood for High-Performance Siding and Decking
This course explores the role of acetylated wood as a high-performance, low-carbon material for exterior siding and decking applications. The course examines the performance and sustainability benefits of the acetylation process compared to conventional wood and synthetic alternatives. Also discussed are specification and installation best practices that directly influence long-term performance and support broader decarbonization goals. The course equips design professionals with practical strategies to confidently integrate acetylated wood into durable, resilient, beautiful, and environmentally responsible exterior assemblies.
Describe the acetylation process and explain how it enhances wood performance, including dimensional stability, moisture resistance, and biological durability, to support long-term material efficiency.
Evaluate the environmental and human health attributes of acetylated wood, including its nontoxic composition, renewable sourcing, and role as an alternative to more carbon-intensive or chemically treated materials.
Discuss installation best practices for siding and decking systems—including rainscreen design, ventilation, fastening, and detailing—to improve durability and minimize moisture-related failures.
Analyze how proper material selection and installation contribute to life-cycle performance, including reduced maintenance, extended replacement cycles, and overall embodied carbon reduction.
Examine global design projects to understand how acetylated wood is successfully applied in siding and decking systems to achieve durable, resilient, and environmentally responsible design outcomes.
