  • Course description: AEC Daily: Fasteners for Commercial Low-Slope Roof Decks

Mechanical fasteners are the primary structural link between the weather-resistant roof membrane and the building’s load-bearing deck. This course examines how commercial low-slope roof assemblies are regulated and provides a technical framework for selecting and verifying mechanical fasteners based on deck type, substrate condition, and required performance. Participants explore deck substrates, fastener types, standardized field pullout testing, and how to integrate verified values with wind uplift calculations to produce code-compliant, site-specific fastener design.

Identify the common roof deck substrates encountered in commercial low-slope construction and explain their impact on the engineering of code-compliant assemblies.

Describe standard and specialty roofing fasteners and specify the correct fastener for each substrate type to achieve required pullout values.

Apply the ANSI/SPRI FX‑1 field pullout verification testing procedure, interpreting results and adjusting design values to reflect actual site conditions.

Integrate deck type, fastener selection, pullout values, wind uplift calculations, and installation best practices to design a robust, code-compliant rooftop fastener system.
