  • Course description: AEC Daily: Designing Outdoor Well-Being: Modern Pergolas for Health, Comfort, and Sustainable Living

This course explores how modern pergola systems enhance outdoor environments by supporting health, safety, and sustainability goals. It reviews design parameters, material choices, environmental benefits, and testing requirements, including features applicable to the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction rating system, the WELL™ Building Standard v2, and SITES® v2. Relevant case studies and project examples are also discussed.

Discuss how access to outdoor spaces supports mental, emotional, and physical well-being and how pergolas enhance comfort and usability to promote healthier outdoor environments.

Describe how pergolas improve comfort through shading and temperature regulation while reducing the heat-island effect to create safer, more functional outdoor spaces that support occupant experience and environmental performance.

Compare pergola system types, materials, and integrated accessories to understand how product choices affect durability, comfort, safety, and suitability for different site and project needs.

Recognize key testing and code requirements—including wind and snow loading—and evaluate how pergola systems support LEED v5, WELL v2, and SITES v2 goals related to thermal comfort and mental and physical restoration.
