  • Course description: AEC Daily: Composite Decking in Marine and Submersible Applications

Marine and waterfront environments expose exterior walking surfaces to moisture, ultraviolet radiation, temperature variations, and repeated wetting cycles that affect durability, safety, and maintenance planning. This course examines how composite decking systems perform under these conditions and how specification decisions influence long-term resilience and environmental performance. These considerations support alignment with green building objectives under LEED® v5 Building Design + Construction and SITES® v2.

Assess composite decking suitability for marine, coastal, and high-moisture environments based on exposure conditions, durability risks, maintenance considerations, and implications for long-term environmental performance.

Compare composite decking, wood, and PVC boards using criteria addressing moisture response, service life, surface temperature behavior, and sustainability considerations, including material composition, manufacturing practices, and environmental documentation, in alignment with LEED v5 and SITES v2.

Interpret verification documentation used in composite decking specification, including ASTM performance standards, allowable span limitations, code compliance requirements, and third-party evaluation reports supporting resilient design.

Explain how decking systems can support accessible outdoor spaces by providing areas for circulation, physical activity, and social interaction, in alignment with LEED v5 and SITES v2 site design goals.
