  • Course description: AEC Daily: Sustainable Design Strategies for Specialty Metals and Gratings

Sustainable design has become a key responsibility in building practices. The decisions that architects, designers, and landscape professionals make at the early stages of design extend far beyond aesthetics and structure. They shape environmental performance, material life-cycle costs, and occupant comfort. This course explores sustainable design strategies focusing on specialty metals and gratings, with a strong emphasis on performance, life-cycle benefits, specification insights, applicable codes and standards, and real-world results. Specialty metals and gratings are also examined for their structural integrity and appearance, resource efficiency, longevity, and performance attributes that contribute to sustainable architectural outcomes.

Define sustainable design principles and relate them to material selection and architectural performance.

Describe the environmental benefits of specialty metals and gratings, including their durability, recyclability, and energy-saving potential.

Integrate sustainable metal solutions into architecture and landscape designs, considering passive systems such as sunscreens, shading, cooling panels, and green facades.

Apply national standards and best practice guidance (e.g., ANSI/NAAMM MBG 534, “Metal Bar Grating Engineering Design Manual”) to ensure compliant, efficient, and sustainable specifications.

Identify how the recycled content of specialty metals and gratings may contribute toward credit requirements in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction rating system.
