  • Course description: AEC Daily: Concrete’s Role in Climate-Positive Design

Concrete is the backbone of modern construction, and it comes with an environmental cost, as do most construction materials. This course explores concrete’s contributions to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and current and emerging solutions to reduce emissions throughout its entire life cycle. Climate-positive design strategies to improve the carbon footprint of exterior projects are presented. Real-world projects demonstrate how permeable pavements are a sustainable alternative to poured concrete surfaces, offering numerous environmental benefits.

Explain the impact of the concrete manufacturing process on global carbon emissions and the measures that the industry is taking to achieve net-zero carbon across the life cycle of concrete.

Discuss climate-positive design strategies, including walkable communities, complete streets, and pocket parks, and the elements that contribute to net-zero carbon targets and the health and well-being of communities.

Explain the environmental benefits of permeable pavers in relation to stormwater management, water quality, flooding, the heat island effect, and carbon emissions.

Use real-world project examples, climate-positive design strategies, and design tools and calculators to inspire and inform material and design choices for exterior projects and support net-zero carbon targets.
