Course description: AEC Daily: Quiet by Design: Acoustic Strategies for Pickleball & Other Sport Courts
Architectural acoustic design focuses on managing airborne and impact sound within indoor and outdoor spaces. This course addresses the acoustic challenges associated with outdoor recreational spaces, focusing on the surge in pickleball popularity. Participants will learn the fundamentals of sound propagation in open-air environments and explore how modern acoustic products can reduce unwanted noise while maintaining functionality and the design intent. Acoustic solutions for indoor spaces requiring noise reduction are also covered, as well as the role of acoustic barriers in meeting the requirements of the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ v2.
Discuss the importance of proper acoustical management in enhancing communication, safety, comfort, health, and enjoyment.
Explain how sound behaves in outdoor environments and the acoustic impacts of pickleball courts on nearby communities.
Review the multilayered approach to addressing acoustic challenges in outdoor spaces to minimize noise impact and how it can be used to support the achievement of the LEED v5 Occupant Experience credit, Option 4.
Identify the types of acoustic barriers designed to reduce noise associated with pickleball, thereby enhancing the well-being of nearby residents.
Recall indoor sound mitigation products that support the achievement of WELL v2 feature S03, Sound Barriers.
