  • Course description: AEC Daily: Improving Façade Designs by Comparing Automated vs. Manual Solar Shading

    Daylight is essential for our health and well-being, but controlling glare and heat gain can be challenging.  This course explores how to increase visual and thermal comfort and reduce energy use by automating the balance of natural and artificial light. Also discussed are the benefits for building performance compared to manual shade operation and the role of high-performance shade systems in meeting requirements in LEED® v4.1 Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction and Core and Shell, LEED v4.1 Interior Design and Construction (ID+C): Commercial Interiors, and the WELL Building Standard version 2.

    Discuss the importance of daylighting and the requirements in WELL v2 and the LEED v4.1 BD+C and ID+C rating systems.

    Describe façade design improvements that integrate with and impact lighting and HVAC energy use and their role in WELL v2 and the LEED v4.1 BD+C and ID+C rating systems.

    Explain the differences between automated and manual solar shading and the benefits of automation to occupants and building performance.

    Review how automated shade systems benefit thermal comfort, glare control, and circadian rhythm regulation and may contribute to WELL v2 and the LEED v4.1 BD+C and ID+C rating systems in these areas.
