Course description: AEC Daily: ADA Compliance for Door Hardware
The intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is to ensure that individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else and are afforded equal access to the built environment. This course discusses the need for compliance with accessibility regulations and how businesses can benefit from it. It explores the ADA, criteria for perimeter and interior access, accessible design requirements for door and doorway components, and relevant codes, standards, and design guidelines.
Discuss how compliance with accessibility regulations creates equitable spaces and opportunities that benefit both individuals and communities.
Recognize how accessible design benefits businesses by improving public image, attracting more customers and qualified employees, and meeting the growing needs of an aging population.
Recall four key criteria for ADA compliance relating to perimeter and interior access of a building.
Utilize ICC A117.1, Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG), and applicable state and local codes and regulations to specify accessible door hardware.
