    More and more jurisdictions are implementing Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) to help address the poor energy efficiency of buildings—a key contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and overall energy consumption.

    While some of these new standards may seem restrictive or simply adding costs, many in fact offer increased design flexibility. But to capitalize on the opportunity, it requires a change in design thinking. 

    1. Understand the design flexibility offered through an integrated envelope and fenestration design approach

    2. Discover which passive elements of the building envelope have the highest impact on energy efficiency, and how those elements can be targeted for improvement

    3. Review and compare two examples of BEPS (BC Step Code & Seattle Code Update-2018), and develop an understanding of the intent, key differences from past iterations and path to compliance
