  • Course description: AEC Daily: Coatings for Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF): Thermal Barrier, Ignition Barrier, & Vapor Retarder

This course discusses the code requirements for thermal and ignition barriers for spray polyurethane foam, the testing required, code requirements for vapor retarders depending on climate zone, and how these coatings are installed.

Review what a thermal or ignition barrier for SPF insulation is, including IBC and IRC language, to gain a better understanding of each and how to correctly specify.

Analyze what an intumescent coating is vs. a fire retardant and how it protects from fire.

Analyze the benefits of a coating compared to other code-prescribed options for meeting thermal or ignition barrier requirements in the IBC and IRC.

Explain what the code requirements are for vapor retarders for certain types of SPF insulation.

Describe field installation of thermal barrier, ignition barrier, and vapor retarder coatings, including how these products are applied and their limitations.

Discuss areas where thermal or ignition barriers are not required, as well as the possible liability of not using the required level of protection on a project when required.

Describe the safe handling and storage of fire protective coatings and what the temperature and humidity limitations are.
