  • Course description: AEC Daily: Insulated Concrete Forms

The construction of residential and commercial buildings that use less energy to operate and are long lived is a key part of sustainable design. Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) provide the necessary U-factor, airtightness, resiliency, and durability for all building types. Insulated concrete forms in residential and commercial construction projects offer excellent thermal performance and reduced energy consumption and operating costs, while maintaining a very comfortable and healthy interior environment. This course examines the ICF wall, including materials and components, discusses design considerations and construction, and identifies how ICF may be used to meet a number of LEED® v4 BD+C credit requirements.

Discuss how using insulated concrete forms in residential and commercial construction projects offers excellent thermal performance and reduced energy consumption.

Explain how ICF mass walls allow for lower up-front mechanical equipment and maintenance costs than typical conventional wood, masonry, or steel construction methods.

Discuss project management and design advantages offering efficiencies in construction completion times.

Explain how the durability of the ICF wall provides public safety during storms by offering a secure housing environment that is resistant to high winds, floods, and flying debris.

Explain how ICF walls have the potential to play a role in projects seeking to meet the requirements of LEED v4 in the areas of energy performance, thermal comfort, waste management, and recycled content.

Explain how an ICF building envelope impacts temperature variability, airtightness, and indoor air quality, facilitating occupant productivity, comfort, and well-being.
