Course Description: CEU Events: Universal Design: Access for All in the Commercial Restroom
Universal design in commercial restrooms is a growing architectural practice that includes and goes beyond ADA-mandated design to accommodate a wider range of individuals. These individuals represent significant percentages of the population, all of whom benefit from thoughtful universal design solutions. The holistic approach supports all versions of temporary and permanent physical, mental, and sensory disabilities, as well as the wide swath of occupants who may not be considered disabled but face specific limitations (ex. elderly, pregnancies, caretakers, etc.). Universal design also supports the "flight to quality" movement - spaces that prioritize occupant well-being, quality of life, flexibility, and positive user experiences. These enhanced spaces bring significant value to a brand and send a message to occupants that they are welcome.
