  • Course description: CEU Events: Practicing Biophilic Design: Tools and Strategies for Stewarding Biophilic Design

Join Terrapin Bright Green’s Bill Browning for an in-depth workshop on how to effectively steward biophilic design in your design projects. Participants will get first hand experience with tools and strategies for enmeshing the design process with biophilic principles and goals from start to finish. The workshop will begin with a deep dive on the experience of biophilia as understood by neurological, physiological and economic analysis. This will be followed by an introduction to the 15 biophilic design patterns, and descriptions of various projects that have integrated biophilic design in unique and place-celebrating ways. Several design tools, developed for Terrapin’s book Nature Inside, will be introduced and form the basis of two hands-on exercises in which participants work together to develop a narrative around desired experiential outcomes then identify key biophilic design interventions to meet those experiential outcomes.

Provide justification for biophilic design based on the scientific and economic findings on biophilia.

Describe the 15 biophilic design patterns and give an example of how each could be incorporated into a project.

Recognize aspects of the indoor occupant experience that can be improved through biophilic design.

Select appropriate location and biophilic design patterns for the intervention based on the place-specific experiential needs of occupants.
