Course Description: AEC Daily: Advantages of Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) for Building Thermal Insulation
ONGOING - 1.25 HRS - FREE
Recall the mechanisms of heat transfer that control the insulating capacity of thermal insulating materials and explain why VIPs offer a thermal resistance of 5 to 15 times better than some traditional types of insulation in a thin, lightweight design, providing opportunities to reduce the thickness of an energy-efficient building envelope, increase indoor space, and optimize land use.
Explain the functions of the main components of a VIP, and by comparing the attributes of the materials used to construct each component, recognize how the thermal performance of the materials in a building envelope can influence future design decisions and impact the overall energy efficiency of the building.
Recognize what actions can be taken to minimize the challenges associated with the potential thermal bridging, handling, and installation of VIPs and determine what design measures can be implemented to protect the building envelope, reduce building energy operational costs, and maintain occupant comfort levels.
Interpret organized observations and evaluations of VIP installations in North America and Europe and explore strategies to minimize building envelope energy loss through the use of VIPs, whether used alone, in combination with other materials, or as part of a composite panel.
