Course Description: AEC Daily: Lightweight Concrete: Design with Assurance
Over the past century, designers and owners have benefited from the use of structural lightweight concrete. In recent decades, some designers have turned away from specifying it due to incomplete evaluation of the full life-cycle benefits of lightweight concrete and substantial misunderstandings surrounding concrete moisture vapor emissions compared to normal-weight concrete slabs. This course explores the full sustainable aspects of using lightweight aggregate concrete and illustrates how structural lightweight concrete is the sustainable design option.
Discuss the beneficial attributes of structural lightweight concrete.
Describe the drying times of normal-weight and lightweight concretes in real-world conditions.
Recognize the need to design the structural slab as a system with subsequent flooring, coatings, and/or roofing.
Contrast the current testing approach for concrete moisture against the principles of sustainability.
Specify appropriate sustainable design approaches and processes to maximize the benefits of structural lightweight concrete while addressing concrete moisture vapor emissions.
