  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Cold Storage and Controlled Environments Using Insulated Metal Panels

Thermally controlled environments such as cold storage freezers and coolers, and food processing and packaging facilities take many different forms. Their performance and functionality depend on their project-specific requirements and can be affected by the conditions the materials and systems are subjected to. This course discusses how insulated metal panels (IMPs) perform the necessary functions to provide an effective energy-efficient building envelope and why they are suitable for use within temperature-controlled hygienic environments—where performance is critical.

Define the functions of the building envelope and explain how IMPs perform these functions by providing all four essential environmental control layers—water, air, vapor, and thermal.

Explain the thermal performance advantages of IMPs to demonstrate why they are ideally suited for use on the exterior and interior of controlled environments—from food and beverage processing to the storage of pharmaceutical supplies.

Examine the different types of coatings used on IMPs for compliance with the regulations of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards.

Describe key installation details for the use of IMPs for all aspects of controlled environments, including key design criteria such as tolerances, load support, and span capability.
