  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Sustainable Curb Appeal

The materials we use have a significant impact on the environment, our communities, and our health. Consequently, material transparency—wherein manufacturers disclose vital sustainability information about their products—is an increasingly necessary element of modern life. This course examines the tools and resources that are available for both manufacturers and the A&D community that effectively communicate transparency information and optimization of building products. Also reviewed are the benefits of the new-generation insulated metal panels (IMPs) designed to achieve a trusted range of health and wellness certifications.

Explain the concepts of material health and product transparency, as well as the factors that influence product specification.

Discuss the driving forces in sustainable building design, including the governing bodies that oversee the certification programs that exist in the industry.

State the resources used by manufacturers to increase material transparency, including health product declarations (HPDs), environmental product declarations (EPDs), Living Building Challenge, and Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard.

Describe the resources (Portico, mindful MATERIALS, and UL SPOT) that are available for architects to help them evaluate the transparency and material health of building products.

Define the components, features, and performance benefits of new-generation insulated metal panels (IMPs).
