Course Description: AEC Daily: Artificial Turf for Residential and Commercial Landscapes
Artificial turf is essentially a flooring fabric made from a variety of materials and layers. Since its creation, the artificial turf industry has studied the behavior of natural grass and the safety and sustainability of artificial grass. This course examines today’s artificial grass systems and discusses how they are carefully planned, designed, and built to suit the specific needs of an outdoor residential or commercial landscape.
Explain the function of the components of an artificial turf system and evaluate the materials that may be used for its manufacture to demonstrate how each component contributes to heat resistance, proper drainage, durability, aesthetics, and safety.
Discuss artificial grass systems in terms of their recyclability, environmental impact, and role in reducing outdoor water use.
Explore the advantages of artificial grass systems over natural grass for playgrounds, and discuss how artificial grass provides nonabrasive, nontoxic, comfortable playing surfaces that are safe for pets and children.
Review the installation and maintenance best practices for artificial grass that ensure long-lasting, slip-resistant, stable landscape surfaces are created.
Cite application examples and discuss the importance of selecting the correct artificial turf system for any application or environmental exposure.
