  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Accessible Site Furnishings: Solutions for Comfortable & Inclusive Outdoor Seating

    Places of public accommodation and commercial facilities in the U.S. must follow the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements regarding many facets of design and landscaping, including site furnishings. This course reviews ADA requirements for tables and benches and the benefits to communities, people, and businesses of creating accessible outdoor seating areas for all to enjoy. 

    Define accessibility, its importance, and the key guidelines for creating an inclusive outdoor seating environment.

    State the benefits of designing accessible outdoor spaces where all people, regardless of ability, can enjoy the outdoors.

    Summarize the ADA requirements for outdoor table dimensions, placement, and aisles for ease of use and accessibility.

    Explain the ADA requirements and the U.S. Access Board guidelines related to outdoor benches that facilitate comfort for the user and prevent injuries.

    Recall the materials and finishes for site furnishings and how they affect the aesthetics and durability of the product.
