  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Single-Ply Roofing Systems Explained

    ONGOING - FREE - 1 HOUR

    Single-ply membranes, along with their installation methodologies, have evolved to best meet the roofing needs of today’s low-slope commercial buildings. This course reviews the most prevalent membranes and describes the advantages and disadvantages of EPDM, PVC, and TPO. An overview of attachment methods is presented, as well as a discussion of single-ply system strength, cool roof benefits, and condensation issues from a building science perspective.

    Discuss the differences between thermoset and thermoplastic membranes and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

    Identify today’s most prevalent single-ply systems—EPDM, PVC, and TPO—and compare their strengths and weaknesses.

    Describe the attachment methods possible for single-ply membranes and restate criteria that can determine the appropriate method for a project.

    Appraise and challenge common misconceptions about single-ply system strength, cool roof benefits, and condensation issues.
