AEC Daily is one of the largest providers of continuing education (CE) to the Construction, Architectural, Interior Design and Engineering communities.     If a facility experiences an environmental, accidental, or deliberate threat, the safety of the building and its inhabitants is a primary concern. Special-purpose doors and windows can address this concern by providing improved security in various applications. This course discusses the regulations and standards applicable to special-purpose doors and windows, including fire ratings, acoustical ratings, blast and pressure resistance, bullet resistance, and radio frequency shielding.

    Learning Objectives

    Identify various applications that utilize special-purpose doors and windows for the protection of personnel and property.

    Discuss the rise in demand for special-purpose doors and windows designed to address our concerns about noise control, privacy, security, safety, and health.

    Recognize the regulatory standards and blast protection categories that establish a facility’s construction requirements and specify a special-purpose door or window assembly based on the security needs of a building.

    Describe the security issues that must be addressed to ensure people, assets, and work activities are protected in the event of a facility or personnel coming under deliberate or accidental threat and detail why special-purpose door and window assemblies are an effective line of defense.
