  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Building the Perfect Envelope with Insulated Metal Panels

    ON-GOING - FREE - 1 HOUR

Understanding building physics is critical to proper building envelope design. Examined here are practical concepts for the building designer, including how cladding systems perform across different climate zones and applications. Environmental control layers and hygrothermal loads are reviewed, as is the concept of perfect/universal wall design. The course focuses on how single-component insulated metal panels (IMPs) function as a perfect/universal wall, simplifying wall system design and installation.

    Learning Objectives

Use the laws of thermodynamics to design proper building envelopes that enhance energy performance and reduce or eliminate maintenance and repairs during the life of the building.

Identify four environmental loads and how they affect building envelopes and interiors, and discuss how to properly establish building envelope control layers to provide protection against these loads to optimize indoor air quality, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency.

Sequence the components of a perfect/universal wall and outline how the design works in all climate zones during all times of the year.

Explain how IMPs function as a perfect/universal wall, and how control layer continuity is achieved at transitions and through the use of integrated windows, contributing to ease of installation and overall thermal efficiency.
