Course Description: AEC Daily: Designing Architectural Shade Structures
ONGOING - 1 HOUR
In commercial, multifamily, and mixed-use applications, outdoor living spaces are a key amenity. Adding depth to storefronts, expanding outdoor services, or improving the comfort of a patio space can be attained with a functional shade structure. This course discusses the types and features of open-frame structures manufactured off-site, their recommended detailing and applications, and the key design considerations for safe and effective installations.

Learning Objectives:
Discuss shade as a key component in the planning and design of outdoor spaces and building exteriors to promote shared interaction, business goals, and health and wellness.
Evaluate the types of materials available for open-frame structures and discuss the pros and cons of each option in terms of durability and maintenance requirements.
Explain the design issues that must be considered before starting a shade structure project to ensure the structure creates effective shade and the final space is accessible, comfortable, and safe.
Discuss the advantages of off-site manufacturing and its benefits in modern shade design.
Incorporate heating/cooling elements, lighting, and other amenities as functional elements of the shade structure.
