  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Designing ADA-Compliant Hydration Stations: Drinking Fountains and Bottle Fillers

This course explores how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and accessibility standards apply to drinking fountains and bottle-filling stations. Participants review key technical requirements, including high/low configurations, clear floor space, approach, knee and toe clearance, spout height, operable parts, and protrusion requirements and examine their relationship to building and plumbing codes. The course also addresses outdoor installations and the sustainability benefits of hydration stations, providing a framework for accessible, compliant, and inclusive design while highlighting considerations relevant to LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction, the WELL™ Building Standard v2, and SITES® v2.

Describe how the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design influence the design and specification of drinking fountains and bottle-filling stations to support accessible use by people with disabilities.

Identify technical requirements for drinking fountains and bottle fillers, including clear floor space, clearances, and reach ranges, to support safe, equitable access and LEED v5, WELL v2, and SITES v2 accessibility goals.

Evaluate the roles of the 2010 ADA Standards, IBC, IPC, and ICC A117.1 and how these standards are used together to support accessible, code-compliant hydration-station design.

Select drinking fountains and bottle-filling solutions that promote hydration, reduce infection risks, and prevent injury through touchless activation and cane-detectable features consistent with WELL v2 concepts.

Evaluate drinking fountain and bottle-filling station features, such as filter status monitoring and bottle counters, that support better maintenance planning and improve water quality, safety, and long-term performance.
