  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Graphite Powered: Rigid Foam Insulation

The construction industry is changing quickly; performance expectations are rising, and energy costs are unpredictable. This course examines graphite polystyrene (GPS) rigid foam insulation and its increasing role in high-performing building envelope designs. The course explores its material properties, manufacturing process, and characteristics that distinguish it from traditional EPS and XPS insulation. The course also examines common GPS insulation applications and product selection considerations, equipping designers with the knowledge needed to develop specifications that support energy efficiency, moisture management, long-term durability, and sustainability goals that align with LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and WELL Building Standard™ v2 objectives.

Explain how graphite additives in GPS insulation enhance thermal performance and support moisture management in building assemblies.

Identify applicable standards and code requirements that support fire safety when specifying insulation for projects in North America.

Evaluate GPS insulation properties in comparison with other rigid foam insulation types based on thermal performance, moisture management, durability, and long-term value.

Select appropriate GPS insulation products for above-grade and below-grade applications that support high-performing building enclosures and LEED and WELL goals.
