  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Enhancing Indoor Air Quality and Energy Efficiency with IAQP

    This course examines the relationship between ventilation strategies, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality in commercial buildings. The course compares ASHRAE Standard 62.1's ventilation rate procedure (VRP) and indoor air quality procedure (IAQP), exploring their strengths, limitations, and compliance requirements. The course also explores how IAQP-based strategies may align with sustainability and occupant health goals reflected in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ v2.

    Compare the VRP and IAQP in ASHRAE Standard 62.1 in terms of their effects on energy use, indoor air quality, occupant health, and ventilation design.

    Evaluate how IAQP strategies such as source control, filtration, and contaminant-based design can improve indoor environmental quality, reduce ventilation-related energy demand, and support healthier indoor spaces.

    Describe the key steps and documentation required to implement IAQP, including contaminant selection, design limits, air-cleaning validation, mass-balance analysis, and post installation verification.

    Determine when IAQP may be the most appropriate ventilation strategy for a project based on outdoor air conditions, energy-efficiency goals, indoor air quality targets, and applicable green building certification requirements such as those in LEED v5 and WELL v2.
