Course Description: AEC Daily: Proper Primers for Steel
This course provides an overview of shopcoat primers for structural steel and their role in corrosion protection and durability. Learners will review primer composition, surface preparation standards, environmental considerations, and protection levels for interior and exterior applications. Current coating standards and performance-based specification strategies are discussed to help design professionals select appropriate primer systems that support long-term structural performance and reduce premature coating failure.
Evaluate how proper surface preparation and fabrication practices support safety, structural durability, and corrosion resistance.
Analyze steel primer composition and performance characteristics, including VOC content, compatibility with fire-protective coatings, and salt spray ratings, to determine appropriate protection levels for varying environments.
Assess current coating standards and performance-based specifications that promote durability, corrosion protection, and public safety while avoiding outdated or noncompliant requirements.
Summarize best practices for coordinating primer selection with topcoats, fabrication sequencing, field welding, storage, and maintenance to support long-term coating performance.
