Course Description: AEC Daily: Noise Control in Construction: Beyond STC and IIC
This course explores how airborne and structureborne noise affects building acoustics and impacts occupant focus, learning, healing, and overall well-being across offices, educational facilities, healthcare environments, and fitness spaces. Participants gain a foundational understanding of sound behavior, testing methods, and common misconceptions and learn how mass, resiliency, and decoupling are integrated into construction assemblies to achieve effective noise control and acoustic performance, in alignment with the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems and the WELL Building Standard™ v2.
Explain fundamental principles of building acoustics, such as frequency, sound transmission, and flanking paths, and how these factors influence occupant comfort and overall well-being.
Evaluate how building assemblies use mass, airspace, resilient elements, and decoupling to control sound transmission and how proper detailing supports indoor environments that reduce unwanted noise and improve concentration.
Interpret acoustic performance data and understand how testing limitations and human sound perception influence the design of comfortable spaces with effective real-world acoustic performance.
Apply noise control strategies to specific building applications, such as offices, classrooms, healthcare facilities, and fitness spaces, to reduce occupant stress and discomfort.
