  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Miscellaneous Metals and Finishes for Exterior and Interior Applications

Architectural metal products play a critical role in both exterior and interior applications by balancing aesthetics, performance, safety, durability, and sustainability. This course examines specialty metal products commonly used in architectural design and how material selection, construction type, and finishes impact long-term performance. The course explores suitable applications and design considerations for wire mesh, perforated and expanded metal, textured metal, and bar and plank grating, empowering designers to make informed material selections.

Identify common architectural metal products and their typical applications and how thoughtful material and finish selection contributes to long-term project durability and environmental performance.

Describe how wire mesh opening size influences functionality and how plant trellis systems support sustainability objectives related to recycled materials, air quality, and occupant comfort and well-being.

Evaluate perforated metal for structural, acoustic, ventilation, and airflow performance, and expanded metal for slip resistance, safety, transparency, security, and material efficiency to inform appropriate material selection.

Differentiate between bar and plank grating systems and explain how construction type affects functionality, load capacity, pedestrian safety, and ADA compliance.
