  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Low-Carbon Concrete and Project-Level Carbon Budgets

As concrete is a carbon-intensive building material, design and construction professionals are encouraged to make informed, low-carbon design decisions. This course explores the evolving path toward low-carbon concrete solutions. Discussions include mix design optimization and trade-offs, exposure class, benchmarks, environmental product declarations (EPDs), and potential contributions toward LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction credits. Structural design strategies, performance-based specifications, and project-level carbon budgets are presented as means to support project and sustainability goals and performance requirements.

Recall the primary source of concrete’s carbon impacts and the cement and concrete industry’s pathway to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Discuss how concrete mix design strategies, such as aggregate gradation, admixture technologies, supplementary cementitious materials, and alternative cement types, reduce carbon impacts while maintaining required performance standards.

Consult benchmarks and EPDs to compare concrete product options to make more informed low-carbon concrete material selections.

Employ performance-based specifications, structural design strategies, and project-level carbon budgets to balance project performance requirements and carbon-reduction targets, aligning with LEED v5 goals.
