Course Description: AEC Daily: Sustainable Recycled Rubber Flooring: Engineered to Perform, Designed to Inspire
Rubber has been recycled for over a century and has been utilized in recycled rubber flooring (RRF) for more than 70 years, demonstrating its proven durability, resilience, and design flexibility. This course examines RRF as a sustainable material solution and its role in enhancing the performance of the built environment. Additionally, the course explains the rubber recycling and RRF manufacturing processes, along with the best practices for specification and installation. Also included is an overview of how RRF can contribute to credit requirements in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) and Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) rating systems and the WELL™ Building Standard v2.
Identify the environmental and sustainability attributes of RRF, including recycled content, durability, life-cycle considerations, and waste reduction benefits.
Explain the rubber recycling process and manufacturing methods used to produce RRF, with an emphasis on responsible sourcing, material transparency, and reduced environmental impact.
Evaluate the performance characteristics of recycled rubber flooring related to occupant health, safety, and comfort, including slip resistance, acoustics, ergonomics, and indoor environmental quality.
Discuss how recycled rubber flooring may contribute to applicable LEED v5 BD+C and ID+C and WELL v2 credit requirements.
