  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Insulated Composite Backup Panels: A Simpler Solution

    Exterior wall systems are the dividing line between the exterior and the interior and must address several fundamental performance goals of the building envelope. This course reviews traditional rainscreen design and examines why, with its single-component construction, an insulated composite backup wall system is a vast improvement over traditional multicomponent building technology.

    Discuss the performance fundamentals of wall design by examining the history of rainscreen wall design.

    Summarize the main attributes of an ideal backup wall system by reviewing the traditional multicomponent backup wall assembly and its design challenges in relation to thermal efficiency, installation, and long-term performance.
