  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Designing with Commercial/Industrial Insulated Metal Wall Panels

Insulated metal panels (IMPs) are lightweight composite exterior wall and roof panels with superior insulating properties. Commercial and industrial buildings benefit from their energy-efficient insulation, lightweight construction, durability, and cost-effective, timely installation. This course discusses IMPs in terms of their design options, appropriate support structure, installation, function, code compliance, and warranties.

Describe the characteristics of commercial/industrial insulated metal panels (IMPs) and the design options available.

Specify the appropriate panel span based on wind loads, panel thickness, panel facings, structural support gauge and spacing, and deflection criteria.

Outline the IMP installation process, noting the importance of proper steel alignment and placement of sealants.

Explain how IMPs are a superior building envelope solution, providing all necessary water, thermal, air, and vapor control layers through a single component.

Recall IMP testing for fire resistance, structural performance, thermal transmittance, water penetration, and air pressure differential to meet the requirements of the International Building Code and FM Global.
