  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Sustainable Solutions for Sectional and Rolling Doors

Can commercial overhead doors contribute to the sustainability goals of buildings requiring garage, drive-through, fire, dock, and service products? To meet these goals, commercial sectional and rolling doors should be engineered to provide energy efficiency and personnel protection, and to mitigate fire and wind damage. This course examines the sustainable attributes of commercial overhead doors and explores their design potential in LEED® compliant projects.

Discuss the sustainable attributes of commercial sectional and rolling overhead doors in terms of their manufacture, material use, recyclability, durability, and longevity.

Discuss how commercial sectional and rolling doors can enhance the energy efficiency of a building envelope and improve the interior environment by increasing daylighting, views, and ventilation.

Discuss the performance attributes of commercial sectional doors in terms of physical security and safety factors.

Identify the LEED categories where commercial doors may contribute to earning points and making a project more sustainable.

Recognize innovative ways to incorporate commercial overhead doors into a variety of building types to improve traffic flow, occupant safety, and property protection by studying an award-winning LEED Gold® project.
