  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Lightweight, Long Lasting, & Low Cost: The Future of Terracotta Rainscreens

Terracotta rainscreen cladding systems enhance building envelope performance through improved moisture management, reflected in the WELL Building Standard™ version 2, as well as through energy efficiency, structural integrity, and durability. The course examines the manufacturing of terracotta cladding, highlighting responsible clay sourcing and postextraction site reclamation, and discusses performance, aesthetics, and sustainability benefits, including how terracotta cladding can contribute to meeting the requirements of LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction. Additional topics include system color, layout, and wall assembly options, best installation practices, and industry standards and tests.

Describe the advantages of a rainscreen cladding system in terms of energy efficiency, structural integrity, and design and how a system can meet the moisture management requirements of WELL v2™.

Summarize how terracotta cladding is manufactured to be strong, durable, and weather, graffiti, and scratch resistant and how the quality of the clay impacts the strength and weight of the final product.

Discuss the material ingredients, material sourcing, recyclability, and reusability of a terracotta cladding system and how an LCA and EPD can be used to assess its embodied carbon impact and meet the requirements of LEED v5 BD+C.

Recall the standards, tests, and installation best practices relevant to the durability, performance, and safety of terracotta rainscreen cladding installations.
