Ron Blank & Associates, Inc.

From our humble beginnings that were sketched out on Ron Blank's mother's kitchen table, a vision was conceptualized for connecting architects and building product manufacturers in a way that had not been done before. Since that moment, RBA has strategically evolved into a multi-platformed suite of services for building product manufacturers and design professionals that aim to connect, educate and energize the professional goals of those who engage them.

  • Course Description: Ron Blank & Associates: Designing with Defense in Mind: Security Strategies for the Built Environment

This course provides design professionals with a foundational understanding of building security through the lens of physical security, material science, and real-world applications. Participants will explore how bullet-resistant materials and forced-entry-resistant design strategies can be integrated into both new and existing structures without compromising aesthetics, functionality, or user experience. The course emphasizes how evolving threats, code requirements, product standards like UL 752, and collaboration with manufacturers all contribute to safer building environments. Attendees will gain actionable knowledge to design spaces that safeguard occupants while meeting both performance and design goals.

Identify the key components and principles of building security, including forced-entry resistance and ballistic protection, and explain their importance.

Interpret relevant codes and standards (e.g., UL 752) that guide the use of bullet-resistant products and describe how they apply to various project types.

Differentiate between bulletproof and bullet-resistant materials, assessing how weight, composition, and level of protection influence material selection and architectural integration.

Evaluate strategies for retrofitting and customizing bullet-resistant systems to preserve the intended functionality, aesthetics, and user experience of a space.
