Course Description: AEC Daily: Green Pathways: Natural Stone Materials for Sustainable Walkway Solutions
Natural stone pathways offer functional, sustainable solutions that maximize user enjoyment of outdoor spaces without compromising aesthetics. This course reviews pathway material options in terms of durability, appearance, and financial and environmental costs and benefits. The focus is on three natural stone pathway mixes, designed to meet the permeability, erosion resistance, accessibility, traffic level, and installation and maintenance requirements of any project. Also reviewed are how these materials may contribute toward credits in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Sustainable SITES Initiative® (SITES®) v2 rating systems.
Restate the benefits and drawbacks of a variety of pathway materials and key considerations relating to use and load requirements, environmental impacts, installation and maintenance time and costs, and design goals.
Explain how natural pathway materials can meet responsible extraction, recycled content, and regional sourcing requirements of SITES v2.
Describe how natural stone pathways support low-impact development and urban heat island reduction goals in line with LEED v5 and SITES v2.
Discuss how natural stone pathways can be installed and maintained for erosion, mud, and dust resistance and equitable access in compliance with ADA, LEED v5, and SITES v2 requirements.
