Course Description: AEC Daily: Zinc Building Envelopes: Sustainable Architectural Metal
The beautiful gray patina of zinc architectural metal has graced the rooftops of buildings in Europe for hundreds of years. This course examines the sustainable characteristics of zinc as a roofing material, including its 100% recyclability, zero VOC requirements, and low embodied energy production process. The life cycle analysis of zinc is examined, as is zinc’s long-term service life. Various types of roof and wall applications are also discussed.
Sate the methods of zinc extraction and production that ensure minimal environmental impact, specifically in relation to land and energy use and air quality.
Describe the characteristics of zinc wall and roof cladding that contribute to sustainability during its use and end of life phases, including its recyclability, zero VOC requirements, and reduced maintenance.
Recall the methods of installing zinc with other metals, stone, and wood to ensure long life and structural integrity of the installation.
Examine the many different applications of exterior zinc wall panel systems.
