  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Beyond Curb Appeal: Choosing the Right Exterior Trim for Your Project

    Exterior trim plays a crucial role in both the function and appearance of a building, which in turn impacts occupant safety and well-being. This course provides an overview of exterior trim functions and common material options available today. Also discussed are product evaluation reports and their role in code compliance; sustainability considerations and embodied carbon; and key considerations for choosing the right trim. Finally, the course applies these concepts to several design scenarios and identifies the appropriate trim option for each.

    List the ways exterior trim can benefit a home or building, improving building performance and supporting occupant safety and comfort.

    Recall five common types of exterior trim and their advantages and limitations in relation to moisture control, air quality, and durability.

    Discuss sustainability considerations relating to the embodied carbon in trim products and their implications for occupant and environmental health.

    Examine an exterior trim product evaluation report and recognize components relevant to sustainability and safety.

    Identify the most appropriate trim product for a design scenario based on performance and relevant criteria.
