Course Description: AEC Daily: Structural Steel: Sustainability & Fireproofing
With the ever-increasing focus on the environmental impact and carbon footprint of buildings, building owners, architects, engineers, and contractors are looking for more information about the impacts of incorporating structural steel into their designs. Presented here is a comprehensive view of the cradle-to-cradle life cycle of structural steel from raw materials through to deconstruction and recycling. We look at how structural steel contributes to LEED® v4 BD+C Materials and Resources credits. The course also details two other important considerations when specifying sustainable structural steel: heat transfer and fireproofing.
Explain each step of the life cycle of structural steel from cradle-to-cradle, identifying methods for reducing environmental impacts and carbon footprint throughout.
Relate the reduced environmental impacts of structural steel throughout its life cycle to LEED v4 BD+C Materials and Resources credits.
Discuss the impacts that collaborative project development and structural steel distribution, fabrication, and erection choices have on more efficient material use and a reduced environmental impact.
Outline the environmental and life cycle cost benefits that can be realized by utilizing prefabricated fireproof columns versus drywall encasement, intumescent coatings, and spray-applied coatings.
